Religious Intolerance, Spring
2016.
Moving to the USA four years ago, I have met so many people from different backgrounds of ethnicity and religions. However, understanding all of these religions correctly is a difficult task to do because social media today is filled with racism and stereotype, making it hard to recognize which one is true and which one is not. That is the reason I choose to take Religious Intolerance as my final honors seminar because not only I want to learn other religions beside mine but also I want to know how to behave in the right way to people around me.
Religious Intolerance, taught by Dr. Dana Griffith, is a fun and informative class about different religions around the world. Most of the class time is spent to talk about the potential for religious tolerance and intolerance toward various religions and religious groups and instances of tolerance/intolerance by various religions toward one another and the scriptural precedents for each of those possibilities. By discussing these topics with other classmates, I quickly learn about the characteristics of each religion and also about how intolerance toward religion is still exist today. In addition, I do further research to write 3 papers for the class, which is really interesting experience because it challenges my own assumption about some religions that I used to have and correct my knowledge about them.
In addition to class lecture and writing paper, I also visit some religious activities on campus to learn more about people's opinions and experience with their religions.
In conclusion, Religious Intolerance helps me expand my knowledge not only about religions but also about how to treat people with respect no matter what religion they follow. I strongly recommend this seminar for other honors students who have the same interest as mine.
