Project Information
1. Provide a brief overview/abstract of your proposed honors experiential learning project.
The project’s goal is to increase the awareness of Vietnamese culture to students in the US. I want to provide information about the history, geography, tradition of Vietnam to any person who is interested in studying it. I want to show that Vietnam is a country full of unique aspects that are completely different from the USA, which is really worthy to discover and learn about. Also, participating in this project is the chance to travel to a whole new country, meet friendly Vietnamese people and try various delicious traditional foods. With the project, students will find the differences between Vietnam and their country.
2. Clearly state how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work (refer to the first two pages of this document with the full description of what is expected in each of these areas).
- Substantial Content and Quality within Global Studies Theme
The project will help students study about the long history of Vietnam, a country which was invaded by many other countries in the past but always fight back to gain its independence. Also, students will understand why Vietnam is called the Pearl of Asia because of its geography. Students can learn about the differences between the cuisine culture between the two countries, about the communism government of Vietnam and many unique traditions that Vietnamese people still keep until now.
To achieve this goal, students will attend many lectures taught by professors who have knowledge about Vietnam and participate in many activities organized by Vietnam Student Association at University of Cincinnati. These lectures and meetings will be conducted every week. Students will meet, discuss, play games, and try Vietnamese traditional food for one hour every week. After gaining understanding about Vietnam through these activities, students will travel to the country and stay for 1 weeks to see and apply what they learn into real situations. Students will stay with Vietnamese family to see the daily life of people there because this is the fastest way to understand the culture here.
- Connection to Academic Goals and Theories
The project is meaningful to me because it increases the awareness of American students about my home country. At the same time, I can use what I know best to help other people.
The project provides me with good opportunities to practice leadership. I can learn how to make plan, communicate with other people and take responsibility of my own decisions.
- Initiative, Independence and Creativity
I think my participation in this program is different because of what I can bring to it. I hope my contribution to the project will be helpful and provides an unique aspect from an international student to American students.
- Reflection & Dissemination
I will reflect the project like a timeline. There will be pictures for every activity of the projects, together with detailed explanation.
- Advisor (list the person’s name, title, and contact information)
University Honors Program
- Budget (if applicable)
The flight ticket is around $1200 for 2 ways. The cost to stay in Hanoi for a week is about $500 for all fees.
I hope the University of Cincinnati can provide funds to offset the cost of participating in the project.
