In order to become a better leader, I have to understand my strength and weakness with my leadership skill. There are many ways to practice this, such as taking a class like Exploring Leadership or reading books about successful leaders. In my opinion, one of the best ways is doing self-assessment that clearly helps you understand your behavior. A good assessment I found is the leadership compass that helps me get to know my work style and identify areas for growth. I consider myself as a “West style” person, which is analytical. I have many reasons to believe this is my correct choice of leadership compass. First, when making decision, I always try to gather as much information I can in order to come up with the best choice. I apply this information in the process of choosing, and at the same time, share it with my coworkers so they can have the same knowledge with me. I like to follow a guideline that I consider appropriate and do not want to skip any part before moving forward. Until I see all of my thinking is logical and thorough, I will not choose something as my final decision. In addition, I want to solve the problems when they come up in case of avoid it by maximizing my resources. By understanding my behavior, I found my weaknesses. I usually waste time from trying to find all the information, which sometimes can be unnecessary. At the same time, because of all the data I got, I believe too much in my choice, which makes me think other people’s opinion, is not as helpful as mine. Sometimes, being too careful is not good because you have to take risk to win big. I will try to use these principles in the future to fix these problems in order to improve my leadership skills.
