The presentation of Dr. Davis on last Friday’s class was really interesting because of all the new information I learnt from it. Although I was not surprised with the information because the issue is quite familiar, all the facts and medium got my attention, especially the concept of tipping point. The history of American public opinion about environmental changes in the beginning of the presentation was new to me since I am an international student. I found it interesting to know how American people changed their point of view from ignoring to starting to support fighting climate changes. This showed that in order to believe something, humankind needs to see it with their eyes directly. No matter how hard the scientists tried to prove, people need to see the evidence themselves, and because of all the extreme natural disasters like those listed in the presentation, people began to notice the changes. This was ironic because only when the consequences happened, human started to act.
The tipping point is a new interesting concept for me to learn about and it really scares me. What if in the future, it happens? How can we adapt to all the climate changes? How can we deal with all the droughts, fires, storms and floods? And in case it will not come in the near future, what does humankind need to do prevent it from happening? There are so many signs showing that the tipping point is really near; therefore there are a lot of jobs for the world to do now to stop it.
Dr. Davis’s talk was a good opportunity for the class to gain new information about climate changes. I hope we will more presentations like this in the future.
