Brazil is losing more and more forest each year because of the need for urbanization and economic growth. The estimates of deforestation in Amazon show that from 1977 to 2005, Brazil lost 15-20 thousand square kilometers of its forest land every year. Although the rate of deforestation has fallen 80 percent since 2004, more than 10,000 square kilometers of forest is still destroyed annually. In exchange, the economy of Brazil has grown about 40 percent, with many more cattle ranching farms and new highways. Furthermore, a lot of Brazil people now come to live in new cities with the hope to have a better life by changing their jobs. However, in order to have that growing economy and more new developed cities, Brazil has to deal with the negative environmental effects created by deforestation and industrialization. Its rainforest is the home of millions of rare and endangered species which can be found nowhere else in the world. Deforestation threats the life of 50 percent of the Earth’s species, including thousand kinds of birds, frogs, etc. Also, many plants known as resources for medicines to cure cancer, HIV, H5N1 can be found in Amazon. In addition, it menaces the life of many tribal people who live in remote areas and depends on the jungle for shelter and food. Moreover, exploiting activities such as mining and logging can contaminate the water resource and harm the health of people in Brazil.
Not only the people of Brazil but also people around the world must have interest in Amazon deforestation because it is the “Lungs of the world.” It plays as crucial role in CO2 exchange process, and because of deforestation, 10 percent of current greenhouse gas is not absorbed as it used to be. Also, the activities of colonization in the jungle by burning down trees to clear land release more than half a million of carbon and 44 million of carbon dioxide, which heavily contribute to global warming every year.
In order to deal with the situation to save not only Amazon but also the Earth’s environment, Brazilian people have a lot of jobs to do. First, the government needs enforce more strict laws to stop illegal logging and mining activities. They also need to stop people from burn forest land to make way for allocated agriculture plots and change it to alternative ways that do not destroy land. In addition, highways need to be designed in way that does not go through Amazon and do not use log taken from the jungle. Furthermore, birth-control methods should be encouraged to help reduce the rate of birth because the more people are born, the heavier the pressure it creates on exploiting and finding resources. However, all of these would be useless without the cooperation between the government and Brazil people because if the people do not want to save Amazon, there would be no possible way to protect it from deforestation. Therefore, they need to help people understand the importance of their jungle and how to protect it properly.
