Population Assignment
This was an interesting assignment because I had the chance to compare the population of the US and my country Vietnam. In addition, I also learned many new things about the difference between a developing country and a much more developed one.
1. Vietnam’s population pyramid in 2013 is closer to the typical pyramid of a less developed country, which has high rate of population growth and unemployment but low national income. This expanding population pyramid is wide at the base and narrow at the top, which means that there are a large proportion of young people and small proportion of elderly people. It also means that Vietnam has high birth rate and death rate in 2013. However, the population is changing to the type of more developed country because the working-age population is larger than young population. The reason is that Vietnam government encourages married couple to have only one to two children, which makes the birth rate to fall.
In 2050, Vietnam will have a stationary population pyramid closer to that typical of more developed country, which has high GDP and life expectancy. It is narrow at the base, which means a low birth rate. It is wider in the middle and stays quite wide until the top, which means the country will have a low death rate in 2053.
2. In 2013, the largest cohort is young people, especially people under 30 years old
In 2050, the largest cohort is working-age group and middle aged people.
3. Vietnam will not have problems supporting its older citizens until 2050 because the working-age group will still have the largest proportion of population. This shows that society can support elder people who do not work anymore. In addition, Vietnam has a solid tradition of family support network, which means most elder people live together with their children; therefore young people can take care of their parents.
