The United States is one of the most developed countries in the world. It surpasses other countries in a lot of aspects such as economics, health care services, and environment. However, one aspect that shock a lot of people is that U.S infant mortality rate is ranked 34th in the world and is one of the highest among all developed countries. Recent statistics show that from 2005 to 2010, there are 6.81 deaths per 1000 new born babies. This rate is even higher than the infant mortality rate of Cuba, which is a much less developed country in comparison with America. Because American people can have access to the most advanced medical technology in the world, the high infant death rate proves the economic, ethnic, and racial disparities inside the U.S. The rate of black babies dying is twice more than the rate of white babies, which shows that the living chance of a baby largely depends on the place he or she is born. The health care services vary from state to state, which is why Alabama’s infant mortality rate is just five and Mississippi’s rate is about 10. Also, it depends on the wealthiness of the family in which the baby is born. If the parents are poor, they cannot afford health service for their child, and the U.S does not have any kind of nationalize health insurance plan that can provide women to the health care they need. In addition, education is one aspect that can show the difference of child death rate. Women who at least graduate high school or are in the middle class or higher are more likely to have healthy babies. Furthermore, high teen pregnancy rate in the US is also one reason of high infant mortality rate because there is a large chance of losing a baby born severely premature.
In order to solve this problem, the U.S needs to have a better health care program for women when they carry their baby. For example, the United States can study other countries which have universal health care that include women’s health coverage before and after pregnancy. Also, there is need for stronger laws and regulations to make sure infants have the best care as possible. In addition, it is important to educate young people about contraception to prevent premature birth. The fact that not all American people know how high the infant mortality rate of their country is shows the necessity to notify people about it.
